The first International Symposium on Confucianism was held by the Confucius Institute at the University of Macau recently, at which many directors, experts and scholars from Confucius Institutes in the United States, Portugal, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong held in-depth discussions, exchanging ideas about academic development and orientations of Confucius Institutes.
At the symposium, experts and scholars made speeches on the development of Confucius Institutes with such titles as “The Prospect and Influence of Confucius Institutes—A Practice in Purdue University” and “The Orientation and Standard of Cultural Researches for Confucius Institutes”.
Also, two lectures were respectively presented by Zhou Xiaobing, Director of the Base for International Chinese Teaching Materials Developing and Teacher Training of Hanban at Sun Yat-sen University and by Hong Wei, the US Director of the Confucius Institute at Purdue University. Many teachers and students from the University of Macau attended the symposium.
As introduced, the Confucius Institute at University of Macao, by taking advantage of its unique geographical location, multi-cultural, and multilingual environment, has developed its distinctive international Chinese teaching and teacher training, and built related exchange platforms to promote cooperation. In the meantime, it has also provided both short-term and long-term courses of Chinese as the second language for non-native Chinese speakers, foreigners who work in Macao and international students.
