Study on the Rituals of Confucians Memorial Ceremony in Confucian Temple written by the deputy dean of Confucius Research Institute and associate researcher Liu Xubing and assistant researcher Fang Wei was lately published by Zhonghua Book Company.
The Confucian Temple should be called as “Wenmiao”. The ritual to sacrifice Confucius and the past Confucian sages in the Confucian Temple is called as “Shidianli”. As the “national sacrifice” of Chinese traditional society, the rudiment of Confucians Memorial Ceremony held in the Confucian Temple could date back to the year when Confucius passed away, manifesting both the respect and reverence to Confucius and saint Confucians of past times by people of later generations and the traditional society’s reverence to the value system established by Confucius. In addition, Confucians Memorial Ceremony has stepped toward the world out of the gate of China as the successful example of “going out” of Chinese culture. By now, Confucians Memorial Ceremony still has widespread influence among global Chinese. Therefore, the study on rituals of Confucians Memorial Ceremony in Confucian Temple has great significance.
Study on the Rituals of Confucians Memorial Ceremony in Confucian Temple was composed of seven parts, sorting out the historical development of rituals of Confucians Memorial Ceremony, specifically analyzing the architectural system and sacrificing system of the Confucian Temple closely related to Confucians Memorial Ceremony, and systematically analyzing the ideological and cultural connotation of Confucians Memorial Ceremony from the angles of culture, politics and religion.
The book was rich and original in content with academic study and population significance. The authores have been focusing on Confucian Temple study for a long time, one of them has served the chief producer and site commander for many years, presided in restoring “Confucians Memorial Ceremony in spring”. Confucius Research Institute is located at the sacred land Qufu, with profound knowledge to Chinese traditional ritual and music civilization, taking the study and spread of Chinese traditional ritual and music civilization as the key planning direction, in September, 2016 and February, 2017, Qufu Center of Chinese Traditional Rites and Music and Chinese Traditional Rites and Music Center of Confucius Research Institute were set up respectively, and this book is one of the early phase achievements of these centers.
